Birkdale United AFC

A close fought first half saw Birkdale United U11N boys who were playing at their home ground of Carr Lane, Birkdale, Southport. Playing the better football, and having more of the possession but being unable to make it tell in front of goal.

The first chance of the game fell to L. Jackson after only 2 minutes who was through on goal with only the keeper to beat, but saw his shot slide just wide of the post. Birkdale squandered a number of chances and could easily have been in front by 3 or 4 goals. (more…)

 A dry but cloudy morning on Carr Lane, Birkdale, Southport was the setting for this the first of three meetings this season between the two girls football teams.

Our sister team within the club, a team who are one of the favourites to win the league – Birkdale North, were the opposition for this weeks match – Bragging rights were at stake.

From the kick off, Birkdale north pushed forward in numbers in search of a quick goal, however they were met head on by a very stubborn Diamond rearguard of C. Mentha, E. Core and A. Sykes, resulting in mainly long range shots on goal, which E. Harrison comfortably dealt with. (more…)

As far as local derbys go, this one failed to disappoint, with both teams producing a fine performance worthy of any televised fixture. It is impossible to be certain which team is going to win a derby, even if its premiership against conference, top against bottom; the 3 points is always up for grabs. (more…)

Another fine, sunny Sunday morning at Carr Lane, Birkdale found the Diamonds taking on Ormskirk FC.

A great start by the girls found them pushing forward right from the kick-off, a penetrating run from M. Price on the left, finished with a shot just wide of the Ormskirk post. From the resulting goal kick, T. Elliot intercepted the ball, laid it out to M. Price, who this time finished her mazy run with a low powerful shot into the back of the net, 1-0 to the girls with less than 4 minutes on the clock.

Following the restart, the Birkdale midfield pressed the opposition back into their own half, with the quartet of M. Price, T. Elliot, C. Molyneux and A. Welford all seeing plenty of the ball. The constant pressure resulted in the Diamonds second goal, when a perfect cross from A. Welford found C. Molyneux unmarked in the box for an easy tap-in. (more…)

Today saw the Girl’s pick up there second win, and keep there 100% record for the season.

The score 4-0 doesn’t really show the true story with Birkdale dominating for the entire match, with only a few loose breaks from Dynamo causing any trouble for the Birkdale defence.

Birkdale United Under 14′s Girls, played host to Redgate today in their first home game of the season at Bedford Park, in Southport, a good start to the game gave Birkdale belief that maybe they could go on to win their third title in as many seasons.

Redgate were certainly much stronger than last season, and any chance of Birkdale girls slowing the game once they had a couple of goals was not possible as Redgate really tested the Birkdale defence, and keeper on a few occasions.

Birkdale Unitd Under 12′s girls football team played host to newcomers to the league Wigan Athletic at Bedford Park in Southport. A very hard game against the newcomers, but Birkdale showed their resolve to hold on to a 2-1 lead under intense pressure from a strong Wigan Athletic side, Birkdale scorers were Armstrong and Heron with a goal each.

This game was a classic “game of two halves”!   Birkdale made a slow start allowing Town Green to swarm forward and were 0 – 3 down inside 12 minutes.

The first goal for Town Green came from a defensive mix up after 5 minutes between J. Young, S. Howard and N. Knight, 0 – 1.

The second goal came after 9 minutes with a good shot from just inside the penalty area that went in the top corner, 0 – 2. (more…)

After our last two games being called off, we finally got our season going it was against Southport Juniors. Birkdale dominated most of the game, but Southport Juniors gave a good account of themselves with some very good tackling.

Birkdale had many chances and it took an own goal by Southport Juniors, to give us a 1-0 win. But the lads all look very rusty and hopefully as the games come along the team will improve and sharpen, and the goals should come as well.

Birkdale made a good start and seemed to have the game well under control with chances falling to L. Aindow whose shot was well saved by the Ainsdale keeper and G. Rawsthorne shooting just wide.

The first goal came after 9 minutes with a great cross from L. Jackson that G. Rawsthorne shot left footed into the top left hand corner of the net, 0 -1.

Birkdale continued to enjoy good possession but were unable to press home their advantage. (more…)

As the team arrived at the ground they were greeted by a foggy pitch, which looked like it hadn’t seen a lawnmower since the two sides last met in 2007. The grass was long and soft under foot, and it took the players most of the warm up session to get used to how the pitch was going to work.
 
Birkdale started off brighter and created their first chance within a minute, with T. Meadows skimming a long range shot past the post. From this point on Golborne were boxed in. The Birkdale pressure was relentless and had 7 clear opportunities in the opening 5 minutes. The Golborne keeper was already keeping her side in the game, with a string of fine saves from point blank range. (more…)

A bright, crisp, autumn Sunday morning at Carr Lane, in Southport was the setting for Birkdale Diamonds girls opening venture into the wonderful world of competitive football. In a total contrast to last weekends total washout for what should have been the opening fixtures for the West Lancs Girls League , the conditions could not have been better.

The opposition, Dynamo Rangers, a strong team from a club, who over the years, have a reputation for developing exceptional players, who progress onto academies such a Liverpool and Everton. (more…)

Birkdale United Under 14′s Girls looked to get a good start to their new season today, but a strong Millers team were quite willing to stop that happening.

Even though Birkdale managed to put eight goals past the Millers keeper, this score certainly never reflected the game, with Birkdale’s opponents much improved from last season.
