Birkdale S vs Town Green Lions

The first round of the cup put Birkdale up against Town Green Lions at Carr Lane. Birkdale were up for this game today and from the kick off looked good and were challenging for every ball.
Birkdale had the majority of the chances, one of which saw good running from Casterton and Mannering, then the ball ended at Welford’s feet. He played a cross-field pass to O’Neill just outside the box who then smashed the ball onto the inside of the cross bar. It looked like the ball bounced down over the line, the Birkdale players were celebrating but the goal wasn’t given. Birkdale had most of the play with Town Green mostly dangerous on the counter attack but Locklon and Sayer in defence were solid. Birkdale had a few corners but just couldn’t get the ball over the line until Welford managed to turn the ball into the goal to go 1-0 up. Thats how it finished at half time.
The second half was much the same with Birkdale making a few changes which saw McCreavy Colocott and Flatts come on.Birkdale’s heads still never dropped and they were very unlucky when Flatts was through on goal but a challenge from a Town Green player seemed to catch his leg. Everyone shouted for a penalty but it wasn’t given. Town Green then got a corner and unfortunately the ball was headed into the goal to make it 1-1. The next five minutes were end to end stuff and with 30 seconds left on the clock Town Green got a free kick just outside the box. Unluckily for Birkdale the ball went straight into the goal to make it 2-1 to Town Green. The final whistle was soon blown.
Birkdale are out of the cup but on the performance all should be very proud. Man of the Match was given to Shaun the manager as everyone was that good!
