This was the second derby game in a few weeks. With Birkdale R winning the first match 2-1, Birkdale S wanted to show the real them.Birkdale S were straight into the game dominating the play from the first whistle. It wasn’t long before Birkdale S were 1-0 up – the goal came from a defence splitting pass from Welford to O`Neill who finished it off, slotting the ball into the goal.
Birkdale R were under constant pressure and shots from Flatts, O`Neill, Welford and Casterton were saved by the goalkeeper. The second goal came from the new Rory Delap – O`Neill with a huge throw into the box and Casterton heading the ball into the goal to make it 2-0.
The third goal again came from O`Neill’s long throw again. This time it was met by Welford on the volley who smashed the ball into the top corner giving the keeper no chance.With half time approaching Birkdale R saw a bit more of the ball but the three defenders of Sayer Collocot and Locklon were clearing everything that came their way. The fourth goal was a carbon copy of the second with the long throw by O`Neill again being met by the head of Casterton.
The second half was much the same as the first with Birkdale S having most of the play. Flatts never stopped running and Welford working hard up front. Birkdale S got their fifth goal with Casterton scoring his third goal from outside the box.
The final score was 5-0. It could have been more but for some great saves from Birkdale R’s goalkeeper. Well done everyone, especially our defence.
