The boys were looking forward to this game, pitch and weather conditions were ideal, perfect.

Allen took the armband this week. He had a real captain’s game who showed everyone what defending is about. Goalkeeper Shaw was again in top form; he made some outstanding saves to keep the score line down. Sharrock started the game with some brilliant runs down the right hand side and nearly got himself on the score sheet a couple of times, well done. Davies put in some strong tackles in midfield and played some great passing football – well in. Parker made great runs down the left hand side and lots of tackles, awesome.
McGuigan was like a conductor, he orchestrated the team with those specialist hand signals, top player – good lad. Rawling was back with the squad - the boys had really missed him. He made lots of timely tackles, some great passing and moving of the ball well done. Coach of the week star Pritchard made lots of runs off the ball and also some fine tackles. Well done! Man of the Match Woods played his heart out. What a fantastic performance - a real class act.  Score at the final whistle; we can’t remember, we were only interested in playing football…………… and that we did . Well done men - Kev.
Coach of the week award has to be me.

Town Green Jaguars v Birkdale Eagles

Monday, September 28th, 2009
Date:         Sunday 13th September 2009
Location:        Winifred Lane, Aughton
Result:  Town Green Jaguars (5) Birkdale R (0)

The boys arrived early, full of anticipation and a great will to win this game . Young Pritchard took the warm up. It was a warm up with a difference, run as far away from the manager as possible find a tree and climb it. Fantastic, well done…

After the warm up we were ready for anyone. At half time we came in 1-0 down. Expectations were still high. You can do this boys, said one of the parents. Come on, lets go for it ……

Off we went some great saves from our keeper. Parker and Allen linked up well in defence. McGuigan had made a decision, he was going to take every single throw-in for Birkdale even if he had to throw it to himself, he was a one man throwing machine. Well done, great throws mate. Woods - well done again you played some really great balls to the forwards, well in son. Sharrock never gave in for one second and  played brilliant – good lad. Davies covered every blade of grass on the pitch – thank you. Man of the Match goes to Woods - congratulations. Coach of the week goes to Pritchard.

We still need parents to come forward to act as models for our Ann Summers party, to be held at Paul Parker’s house. I would like to remind everyone that this event is now full. Well done boys. Final score T.B.A.

Burscough v Birkdale United

Monday, September 28th, 2009
Date:         Sunday 27th September 2009
Location:        Priory High, Burscough
Result:  Burscough (1) Birkdale (0)

Our third game of the season and only the third match the girls have played together as a team. The parents had high hopes for this game as the girls were starting to gel as a team.

It was a determined start to the match for the Birkdale girls, with a near goal within the first few minutes . Birkdale Girls dominated the game in the first half, the defence were strong and the midfield kept blocking and getting the ball back up to Burscough’s half but after quite a few good passes and shots from the forwards it wasn’t for going into the back of the net. Then seconds before half time out of nowhere Burscough managed to sneak in a well-taken goal.

The second half started with McGuire the goalkeeper not being able to play due to a wrist injury. Emily did a great job replacing her in goal. Again Birkdale played a great second half but could not get the ball into the net.

A great match by both teams but an unfortunate 1-0 defeat to Birkdale.

Well done girls, we all enjoyed the match.

Athletico Girls v Birkdale D

Monday, September 28th, 2009
Date:         Sunday 27th September 2009
Location:        Orrell Road, Litherland
Result:  Athletico Girls (2) Birkdale D (1)

The game got under way on a pleasant Sunday afternoon. Birkdale girls struggled at first to get out of their own half as Athletico pressed, but the defence of G Cunliffe, E Core and C Mentha and keeper E Harrison stood firm, and eventually the game evened out. Birkdale, however looked out of sorts. The deadlock was broken by an accidental own goal by a Birkdale player who was trying to block a shot which deflected into the net. The midfield of L Smith, T Elliot, R Hubbard and C Molyneux - with V Grocott coming on as sub - battled hard but the game was narrow with little width. Soon Birkdale applied some good pressure resulting in a great long range effort from R Hubbard which made the score line 1-1.

The second half commenced with Birkdale playing slightly better but still far from their best. L Edmondson had a couple of good chances after managing to lose the two defenders who where constantly marking her. More substitutions rolled on and off with the introduction of A Welford. Birkdale began to look tired, several girls had been on the sick list  that week and some right up until the day before the match. I believe that this contributed to the eventual result. During the second half both teams had their chances but most notably Athletico had two very good shots forcing one fine and one outstanding save from keeper E Harrison. It wasn’t to be Birkdale’s day today though, as they conceded with only a couple of minutes left to play making it 2-1. Although they threw everything into the remaining minutes  pushing A Welford up front and nearly equalised, it wasn’t to be. The game closed 2-1 to Athletico.

Birkdale S v Birkdale R

Monday, September 28th, 2009
Date:         Sunday 20th September 2009
Location:        Carr Lane, Birkdale
Result:  Birkdale S (1) Birkdale R (0)

Sunday 20th September was derby day and a very warm afternoon for football. Birkdale S v Birkdale R is always a very tense game with both teams wanting to win to gain the bragging rights.

Birkdale S were not at their best for the game and you could tell by the way everything was 100 miles an hour and we didn’t keep hold of the ball and pass it around like we normally do. Birkdale S were on top most of the game but with Welford being marked by two defenders for most of the game it was up to Casterton, Flatts and Oyebola to try to get a goal. The goal came right at the end of the first half with a great dribbling run by Oyebola who scored with a very good finsh.

Birkdale R couldn’t get past the defence with Colocott stopping most of their forward play. When they did shoot on goal Ross was equal to the task.

Over all Birkdale S were the better side but Birkdale R made us work very hard and kept everyone’s nerves going till the final whistle. Well done everyone on both teams for a great game.

Redgate Rovers v Birkdale S

Monday, September 28th, 2009
Date:         Tuesday 15th September 2009
Location:        Redgate, Formby
Result:  Redgate Rovers (0) Birkdale S (7)

The last of the midweek game away to Redgate and Birkdale looked sharp from the kick-off with Oyebola (3),Welford (2), Casterton  (1) and O`Neil (1) all on the score sheet. After some bad errors in our last game at the back the defenders of Locklon, Huyton, Soyer and Colocott where all solid at the back and dealt with everything Redgate threw at them, and also Ross in goal for Birkdale was first class. Well done everyone.
