The Club was shocked and saddened to learn today of the sudden death of Anita Shaw, former Club Secretary and current Craven Minor League Welfare Officer.
Anita served as Secretary from 2002 to 2007 and was instrumental in attaining the Charter Standard and Charter Standard Development Awards. She was also responsible for the Club winning the Charter Standard Development Club of the Year in 2007. Without her drive, determination and enthusiasm, Birkdale United would not be anything like the club it is today. She set many of the high standards which are still adhered to.
She also instigated the first club motto ‘Young People Matter’, which fully encompassed what the Club was setting out to achieve. Her support for the development of both the male and female sections is borne out in the size and depth of the club today. She reminded us constantly what we were there to do, and never let us forget that our priority was always the young people in our care.
Anita was also a qualified FA Coach and as well as helping with coaching within the Club, she was also part of the Management team which took a Sefton Representative Under 16 Girls team to Mons in 2006. Her care and sense of responsibility for the young ladies in her care was particularly inspiring.
Moreover, Anita made a huge difference in the lives of literally hundreds of children and young people through her work with – amongst others – Birkdale United, Hesketh Colts, Southport FC Juniors, Southport FC and the Craven Minor, and the sheer size of her legacy is difficult to accurately assess. Her sad passing leaves a gap which will never be adequately filled, and her absence is felt by those who knew her, worked with her, and shared her friendship.
Everyone at Birkdale United would like to send their condolences to her husband Simon, and their sons Michael, Nick and Niall.
Rest in Peace Anita x
