Town Green v Birkdale United U11 Girls 29/1/12

February 1st, 2012 by SharonCaul

Town Green v Birkdale U11′s

Birkdale were away today playing the only team that has beaten them this season and once again the match didn’t disappoint from kick off, Town Green started the brighter with some excellent work down the right hand side that produced two great goals in the first ten minutes for Town Green to have a deserved advantage. Birkdale started to come more into the match then and with route one football got a goal back with Macy finishing calmly in front on the net to make it 2..1.

This did seem to perk the girls up a bit and they started passing a bit better with Lily having some good runs down the right and Ava on the left they helped create some space for Macy to score again before half time to make it …2-2…..

The second half continued to be a close affair with the pitch being very boggy it was hard work for everyone but Town Green managed to take advantage again with 2 quick goals to make it …4-2… then the Birkdale girls responded with 2 quick goals themselves with Macy getting her hat-trick and Ava  adding her first to get us level …4-4….

The game was very tight with both teams coming close with Birkdale hitting the crossbar and post and Town Green having shots cleared off the line but with only a few minutes to go Macy got clear again to get her fourth …..5-4…..

The last 2 minutes Town Green pushed forward but the Birkdale defence held firm with great play from keeper Faye, defenders Megan and Emily also the midfield getting back to support with Lily, Ava, Grace,  and Molly all putting their best effort in at different stages.

Well done to both sets of girls for a great game of football once again.

Team sheet; Faye,Molly,Grace,Ava(1),Emily,Robyn,Macy(4),Lily and Megan

Anita Shaw

January 17th, 2012 by admin

The Club was shocked and saddened to learn today of the sudden death of Anita Shaw, former Club Secretary and current Craven Minor League Welfare Officer.

Anita served as Secretary from 2002 to 2007 and was instrumental in attaining the Charter Standard and Charter Standard Development Awards. She was also responsible for the Club winning the Charter Standard Development Club of the Year in 2007. Without her drive, determination and enthusiasm, Birkdale United would not be anything like the club it is today. She set many of the high standards which are still adhered to.

She also instigated the first club motto ‘Young People Matter’, which fully encompassed what the Club was setting out to achieve. Her support for the development of both the male and female sections is borne out in the size and depth of the club today. She reminded us constantly what we were there to do, and never let us forget that our priority was always the young people in our care.

Anita was also a qualified FA Coach and as well as helping with coaching within the Club, she was also part of the Management team which took a Sefton Representative Under 16 Girls team to Mons  in 2006. Her care and sense of responsibility for the young ladies in her care was particularly inspiring.

Moreover, Anita made a huge difference in the lives of literally hundreds of children and young people through her work with – amongst others – Birkdale United, Hesketh Colts, Southport FC Juniors, Southport FC and the Craven Minor, and the sheer size of her legacy is difficult to accurately assess. Her sad passing leaves a gap which will never be adequately filled, and her absence is felt by those who knew her, worked with her, and shared her friendship.

Everyone at Birkdale United would like to send their condolences to her husband Simon, and their sons Michael, Nick and Niall.

Rest in Peace Anita x

Birkdale Utd V Golborne Girls U11 4/12/11

December 4th, 2011 by PeterCaffrey

Birkdale v’s Golborne Girls U11

Today saw top verses bottom of the league in terrible conditions with rain and hail but both teams worked hard and carried on regardless.
The first half saw Birkdale on the front foot from the start pegging Golborne back in their own half and trying to pass the ball around and with endeavour and hard work took the lead when Macy managed to finish a scramble in the box …1-0….
Birkdale continued to keep the ball in the Golborne half with some great work in midfield from Molly, Grace,Lilly and Megan creating many chances for Macy but with good work from Golborne defence and the keeper kept the score down with Macy adding 2 more to her tally before half time to make it ….3-0…..
Half time.
The second half started in much the same way and letting Megan loose on the left wing she managed to score 2 goals in a few minutes, Macy added 3 more to her total , Lilly managed 2 goals from the right wing , Faye came out of nets and managed to get on the score sheet and also Molly adding a goal near the end. A big well done to all the team with Emily and Eva keeping everything out from defence the midfield for some great passing and Macy for some great finishing.

Birkdale United hits hat-trick at Sefton Sports Awards!

June 18th, 2011 by admin

Birkdale United was celebrating on Wednesday night as they bagged a treble of prestigious awards at the Sefton Sports Awards.

The Club was named Joint Winner in the Club of the Year category with Chesterfield Community Netball Club – many congratulations to them also. This was in recognition of the Club’s amazing growth over the last few years and the work which is done with schools and the local community as well as the relevant government bodies.

There were also two very unexpected award wins for two people who have put a lot of work and effort into the Club for a number of years. They were unexpected, as Sharon Caul had nominated them without their knowledge!

Firstly, Club Vice-Chairman Noel Warham was named Coach of the Year. This was in recognition of his decade of service to the development and growth of Girls and Women’s Football in Sefton, and all his work on behalf of the Club. Coming in the same season as the Women’s section was promoted to the Club’s highest ever level, it represented a wonderful end of the season for Noel.

Finally, Club Welfare Officer, Tracey Caffrey, was named Club Volunteer of the Year. Tracey has been with the Club longer than any other member of the Committee and has worked tirelessly to ensure that children and young people can enjoy their football in a safe environment. She has also worked hard with the Fundraising Committee and is in all honesty one of the unsung heroes of the Club.

Coming at the end of the Club’s most successful ever season, these awards – which are even more prestigious as they are chosen from clubs and individuals from every single sport which is played in Sefton – could not have come at a better time. It was particularly poignant that Sam Benbow – without whom there would be no Birkdale United – was at the event to receive the Club of the Year award and take pride in the achievements of those who have carried on the good work he started for the young people of the town.

The awards will be highlighted in next week’s edition of the Southport Visiter, which is out on Thursday 23rd June. Reserve your copy now!

Club Presentation is Huge Success

June 18th, 2011 by NoelWarham

The Club held it’s Annual Presentation on Saturday 11th June, and for the first time this was held at Greenbank High School. As in previous years, given the size of the Club, this was split into Senior and Junior Presentations. Guest of Honour was the Club Founder and  President, Sam Benbow. Both Presentations were opened by Club Chairman Kevin Stockley, and Secretary, Sharon Caul, before it was the Club Vice-Chairman, Noel Warham, who took on the role of host of the event.

The Presentation was one of the best yet and was particularly well attended. The main club prizes went to some very deserving recipients. The third person to receive the Sam Benbow President’s Cup, for outstanding service to the Club, was Megan Coulter, Captain of the ‘Liverpool’ Ladies team. Clubman of the Year was Charlie Hayward, and Clubwoman of the Year was Megan Tasker, while the Coach of the Year award went to Rhys Smith, who works with three teams within the Club.
