Birkdale Utd v Belvedere – Under 9′s Hightown League Saturday 25th February 2012

Birkdale Utd v Belvedere –  Under 9′s Hightown League Saturday 25th February 2012 11.15am

Another fine day in Hightown as Birkdale look to build on last week’s impressive win.

Bad news for Birkdale though with the consistent Woods and Smyth ruled out through injury, so last week’s M.O.M. Owens-Hunt having to move into defence with McCreavy for his 1st game in that position.

As the game kicked off Birkdale were straight into their rhythm and pressing Belvedere back and into their own box, only some last ditch challenges and blocks keeping their goal intact. It was a full 5 or 6 minutes before Belvedere got out of their own half but Owens-Hunt and McCreavy defended superbly. When the 1st goal came the only surprise  was it took so long to arrive with the ball breaking to the edge of the box where the unmarked Upton rifled the shot into the far corner leaving the overworked Belvedere keeper with no chance(1-0)

The first half ended with Birkdale on the front foot and only a combination of  great keeping and poor finishing keeping the score down.

Half -time Birkdale Utd 1 – 0 Belvedere

As the second half started and no substitutes it came as no surprise that Birkdale looked a bit lethargic at the start of the second half giving Belvedere their best spell of the whole game. It took another 4 or 5 minutes before Birkdale got back on top of the game with Upton, Ball, Hobby and Laing combining well to keep their goalie busy. Another fine move down the left saw Upton skip past a couple of challenges to find Laing on the edge of the box who did well to hold the ball and laying it off to Hobby who put it away to extend their lead(2-0)

As Belvedere pushed numbers forward trying to get themselves back in the game Hobby exploited the space well with some fine runs. Laing who for most of the game had to deal with 2 defenders, held the ball up well to bring in other players, but along with Ball and Upton they couldn’t convert their chances and even the very impressive Belveder keeper almost let in a long range effort from Hobby which bounced over him and onto the bar and across the goal.

The game ended as it has started with Birkdale in control.

Full time Birkdale Utd 2 – 0

Goals- Upton 1 – Hobby 1

Birkdale building on last week’s win with their best performance of the season.

M.O.M. J.Owens-Hunt a debut in defence and tackled well and supported the attacks well.

BIRKDALE UNITED V MANCHESTER CITY SEMI-FINAL U11 GIRLS 4/3/12

March 8th, 2012 by SharonCaul

Birkdale v Man City  Semi-Final Cup U11 04/03/12

We expected a hard game today playing the team with all the money! Both teams started well with few chances being created but it was Birkdale that broke the deadlock on 10 mins with Faye catching the ball in the box looking up and seeing Macy was 1v1 up front she kicked long for Macy to pick the ball up run with it and just calmly knock it around the keeper to take the lead…1-0…

City were playing some good football though passing it around the pitch and although the Birkdale defence of Ava/Emily/Megan worked very hard the ball managed to get through them and City scored twice within a few minutes to take us into half time @ …1-2….

The second half was a very even encounter again and Birkdale had the chances to score on various occasions with the stand out chance coming to Molly when after Macy had a shot which left the keeper stranded it cracked the post and from a yard out and with no keeper to beat Molly smashed the ball onto the post again! With the city defenders throwing themselves in front of lots of our shots they were doing a great job stopping us scoring again, City were creating a few chances themselves now with a more open game but Faye was doing great in nets today. The game was coming to a close with only a couple of minutes left when City had a chance and took it very well to score again …1-3….. Full time.

Well done to all the girls on the pitch I think City just deserved the win today.

Well done to Emily whom despite being very poorly fought through and played well.

Bullford Boys v Birkdale Utd – Under 9′s Hightown League Saturday 25th February 2012

Bullford Boys v Birkdale Utd –  Under 9′s Hightown League Saturday 25th February 2012

It was a great day for football on a poor pitch with both teams needing a win after both losing last week.  As the game kicked off both teams were struggling on a poor pitch with the first real chance being a shot from a tight angle which  Instone did well to keep out for a corner. As the half progressed Birkdale were the more dominant side with  Upton and  Ball failing to test the Bullford goalie with long range efforts. However, when  Laing did hit the target the goalie kept him out. A corner from the left was met with a powerful header from Woods but he failed to hit the target.  The next corner from the right from Upton saw him curl it straight in at the near post from the corner(0-1).

The half finished with Birkdale finishing strongly with another long range effort from substitute  Owen-Hunt tipped over superbly by the Bulford keeper.

Half -time Bullford Boys 0 – 1 Birkdale Utd

The second half started as the first half ended with the Birkdale midfield running the show with Owen-Hunt running rings around the Bullford midfield with his quick feet and skill. Unfortunately their goalie played just as well to keep out efforts from Laing and Upton, so it came as a shock when from a rare corner from Bullford was met with a fine header to level the scores(1-1)

The goal didn’t upset the team too much with again the midfield taking control and our goalie and defenders having a quieter game than in recent weeks. As more chances came and went it looked as though a draw was on the cards until a moment of skill down the left wing by Owens-Hunt when he skipped past a couple of defenders and hit a low shot which the keeper did well to keep out but Alex Hobby was in the right place to tuck away the loose ball into the far corner(1-2) That goal came with seven minutes to go and apart from a free-kick which hit the bar it was Birkdale who finished the game stronger but they couldn’t add to their lead.

Full time Bullford Boys 1 – 2 Birkdale Utd

A good game with many excellent performances especially in midfield

M.O.M.  Owens-Hunt  - some nice footwork and hard work in midfield and unlucky not to get on score sheet.

 Team – C.Instone(gk) – L.Woods – M.McGreavy – A.Ball(c) – D.Upton – A.Hobby – L.Laing _ subs _ J.Owens-Hunt

Birkdale United v Academy Juniors – Quarter Final League Cup 26/02/12 U11 Girls

March 1st, 2012 by SharonCaul

Birkdale v Academy Juniors Quarter Final League Cup 26/02/12

Birkdale faced a team from the North Division today in the quarter final of the league cup , the first half was I have to say a very bleak affair with neither team giving much room for any real attacks on goal with Academy defending in numbers, it was no surprise when half time came and it was still 0.0….

The half time team talk seemed to do the trick though with Birkdale coming out more determined in the second half, trying to get some passing going to break down the Academy defence and it happened when after 5 minutes Macy broke from midfield, skipped, passed the last defender and slotted the ball into the far right corner …1-0…..

This opened the game up a bit and Academy had a few chances as well now but Megan was having a great game at the back and saved Birkdale on 3 separate occasions with last ditch tackles to stop Academy breaking through, and with more space came more goals with Emily and Macy combing twice with some neat passing to both score goals in quick succession making it …3-0…..

Despite their best efforts Academy couldn’t get a goal back with good work from Molly/Lily/Robyn in midfield Faye/Megan/Ava at the back and lots of running from Macy/Emily up-front  Birkdale held out to win the game …3-0….

Well done to all the girls and all at Academy who really surprised us with their quality of football.

Team sheet; Faye,Molly,Megan,Lily,Ava,Emily(1),Robyn,Macy(2)

G.O.M; Megan.

Churchtown Athletic Yellow V Birkdale United Under 9 Boys 21/2/12

February 23rd, 2012 by SharonCaul

Churchtown Athletic Yellow v Birkdale Utd

On a sunny winters morning in Hightown and with a couple of Birkdale players in the Churchtown team, two evenly matched teams took to the field.  Once again we were struggling to get the numbers with only 7 players turning up and no goalkeeper or subs again.

We were slow to start again with our defenders (McCreavy &Woods) making a few  good last ditch tackles to keep us in the game, and we struggled to get out of our own half at times. After 5/6 minutes we were 1 -0 down with a scrappy shot from the edge of the box.  We managed to keep the score down to 1-0 for the next 8 or 9 minutes with some luck and good work from our goalkeeper (Owens-Hunt) and then before we knew it we were 3-0 down.  We then  woke up and started playing football and we pulled a goal back before half- time when Laing was found in the box and as he turned and hit it the goalie did well to smoother it but the ball fell kindly to Laing who put it away at the second attempt.  The first half ended with a few long range efforts from Smyth and Upton but failed to test the goalie.

Half-time Churchtown Athletic Yellow 3 – 1 Birkdale Utd

The second half kicked off and with another player (Woods) taking his turn in goal we were slow to start again with us having no substitutes, Churchtown were able to bring on fresh legs. A clever pass over the top from Churchtown and a smart finish to match and we were 4-1 down.

A pretty even second half was ruined for us when Churchtown scored again somewhat against the run of play (5-1). A smart passing move involving Smyth and Owens-Hunt who found Laing in the box who laid it into the path of Upton who finished well into the far bottom corner (5-2).

We then pushed on and were the better team with a few chances and even hitting the woodwork. Even when Churchtown broke away McCreavy mopped up superbly at the back.  Owens-Hunt pulled another goal back(5-3) and although we played well after that it never looked like we would get them last two goals back.

Final score Churchtown Athletic Yellow 5 – 3 Birkdale Utd

Well done Churchtown.

M.O.M. Morgan McCreavy some outstanding last ditch defending.

Team:  Owens-Hunt – Woods – McCreavy – Smyth – Upton – Ball(c) – Laing

Birkdale United V TMS U11 Girls League Game 19/2/12

February 23rd, 2012 by SharonCaul

Birkdale Utd v T.M.S League 19/02/12

Perfect conditions for football this week with the top two teams from the division playing for the second week running.

Birkdale once again started brightly with many of the team trying different positions today with all the girls giving 100% from the off. There was some great play, passing the ball around the whole pitch from the defence of Ava and Megan to midfield with Macy knocking the ball wide to Molly/Robyn/Lily to cross in to Emily who was doing a great job up- front. The chances kept coming and in the end it was Lily who scored first with a pass from Emily to calmly hit the ball in the net ..1-0…

The girls carried on with excellent football still creating chances and another goal had to come and it did with Macy latching onto a pass from Emily to take it out to the left and had a shot from a really tight angle which just squeezed into the net….2-0….

Half time

Football is as they say a game of two halves and what a difference it was, when TMS had a shot/pass that went goal-wards which Birkdale accidently put in there own net! ……2-1….

This action seemed to give TMS hope and then it was their turn to be on top of the game, as the Birkdale girls started to just hit the ball rather than pass it they kept putting themselves under pressure giving the ball away so much, but they did hold out till the final whistle to win the game ..2-1….

Well done to all the girls again for a great team performance especially the first half.

Team sheet; Faye,Robyn,Megan,Molly,Lily(1),Emily,Macy(1) and Ava

Match Report Formby FC v Birkdale United S U9′s 12/2/12

February 13th, 2012 by SharonCaul

Formby FC v Birkdale Utd S

On a cold winter’s morning and with players missing with illness it was top against bottom in the league playing against each other at Formby’s ground. After kick off within a couple of minutes of the kick off we were 1-0 down with a smart finish into the bottom left(goalie’s right) corner leaving the goalie(Sperrin) no chance. We had a chance to hit straight back within a couple of minutes with   a nice move down the right hand side but Formby’s goalie covered Laings shot well. It was pretty even then for the next 10-12 minutes with our goalie pulling off a few fine saves to keep the score down to 1-0 but when the second goal went in our heads dropped and a third quickly followed. We lost another player with illness just before half time.

Half- time Formby 3-0 Birkdale Utd S

The second half was one way traffic with Formby swarming all over our hard working defenders and only the effort of them,  and some fine saves from our goalkeeper(who was on his sickbed yesterday) restricted  Formby to just 3 goals in the 2nd half.  Even a late consolation wasn’t going to be as the final chance went just the wrong side of the post.

Final score:  Formby 6-0 Birkdale Utd S

Well done to Formby who thoroughly deserved their win

M.O.M – Sperrin (goalkeeper) if it wasn’t for his performance it would have been double figures

Team D.Sperrin – L.Woods – G.Heathcliff-Core – O.Insley – J.Martin – B.Boocock – L.Laing(c)

BIRKDALE UNITED V TMS SEMI-FINAL U11 GIRLS 12/2/12

February 13th, 2012 by SharonCaul

Birkdale United v T.M.S –  U11   12/02/12

Excellent conditions for football today and what an excellent game of football it was with a cup final at stake.

Both teams pushed hard from the start but without many clear chances being created with both defences working hard  a chance was made when Ava played the ball wide to Macy on the left to drill in a cross which Lily got on the end of to finish into the bottom corner …1-0….

The game continued to be very tight with Emily and Megan keeping the TMS attack at bay and the midfield of Ava, Molly and Lily running all over the pitch there wasn’t much space for either team to get any clear chances on goal and the first half finished …1-0….

2nd half  was much as the first with both teams pressing but chances were few and far between both teams hit the post but great team work from both TMS and Birkdale stopped either team from scoring again. So the match finished with both teams happy from a hard fort match but with Birkdale just nicking it with their first half goal… well done to all the girls on the pitch.

Team sheet: Faye,Molly,Megan,Emily,Ava,Lily(1),Macy and Robyn

G.O.M: Lily

Town Green v Birkdale United U11 Girls 29/1/12

February 1st, 2012 by SharonCaul

Town Green v Birkdale U11′s

Birkdale were away today playing the only team that has beaten them this season and once again the match didn’t disappoint from kick off, Town Green started the brighter with some excellent work down the right hand side that produced two great goals in the first ten minutes for Town Green to have a deserved advantage. Birkdale started to come more into the match then and with route one football got a goal back with Macy finishing calmly in front on the net to make it 2..1.

This did seem to perk the girls up a bit and they started passing a bit better with Lily having some good runs down the right and Ava on the left they helped create some space for Macy to score again before half time to make it …2-2…..

The second half continued to be a close affair with the pitch being very boggy it was hard work for everyone but Town Green managed to take advantage again with 2 quick goals to make it …4-2… then the Birkdale girls responded with 2 quick goals themselves with Macy getting her hat-trick and Ava  adding her first to get us level …4-4….

The game was very tight with both teams coming close with Birkdale hitting the crossbar and post and Town Green having shots cleared off the line but with only a few minutes to go Macy got clear again to get her fourth …..5-4…..

The last 2 minutes Town Green pushed forward but the Birkdale defence held firm with great play from keeper Faye, defenders Megan and Emily also the midfield getting back to support with Lily, Ava, Grace,  and Molly all putting their best effort in at different stages.

Well done to both sets of girls for a great game of football once again.

Team sheet; Faye,Molly,Grace,Ava(1),Emily,Robyn,Macy(4),Lily and Megan
